The Black Cat's Revenge

Description

An illustration depicting the climatic ending of Edgar Allan Poe's, "The Black Cat", arguably his darkest tale. The narrator has murdered his wife and walled her body up behind the bricks in his wine cellar. He had intended also to kill the pet cat, who's eye he had previously gouged out in a drunken rage, but it had gone missing.

Much later during the police investigation, completely confident in his own safety, the narrator comments on the sturdiness of the building and raps upon the wall he had built around the body. A wailing sound fills the room. The alarmed police tear down the wall and find the wife's badly decaying corpse. Perched on her head, to the horror of the narrator, is the screeching black cat. As he words it, "I had walled the monster up within the tomb!"

Have you read The Cask of Amontillado? Very similar, equally disturbing in a different way.
